The Bristol Brabazon aircraft was a commercial derivative of the wartime proposal for a "100-ton bomber" and was intended to fulfil the role of a cross-Atlantic airliner for passengers, freight and Airmail.
Only two aircraft were ever built at the Filton works in Bristol but only one ever flew. The second aircraft was to use the Bristol Proteus engine, similar to the SARO Princess but this was never fitted as intended and the first of the two aircraft constructed, the aircraft that flew, used the Bristol Centaurus engine.
The aircraft could be considered as being at the forefront of technical achievement in its day but never entered into commercial service, being outpaced by the emerging jet age. Both aircraft were broken up during the early/mid-fifties and little now remains. |
