Research information

The Short 'C' Class - "Canopus" is produced in a limited edition of only 100 models and has been modelled to a scale of 1:144. It is made of high-density resin with metal component parts such as rotating propellers, radial engines, beaching chassis, trolley and aerials.

The model is available bespoke, built to customer order in either the all-over silver scheme of Imperial Airways of 1936 or in the BOAC livery with the high-visibility stripes for this early wartime period, which followed the BOAC acquisition of Imperial Airways in April 1940.

Either model is available with the carefully-modelled beaching gear fitted, loose or not included at all; the collector will choose his or her preference. However, because of the weight of the model the beaching gear has to be permanently fitted and is not removable for fitting/unfitting by the collector. The beaching gear has rubber tyres which allow for a degree of impact resistance for placing in the desired display position and has rotating wheels. It is possible to order the beaching chassis to be supplied loose, ie NOT fitted to the model and for placing around the latter for display.

The four metal propellers rotate and have a hint of the De Havilland manufacturer’s insignia on the blades. The centre boss, with its pitch activators, has been sensitively represented and the Bristol Pegasus radial engines have been faithfully modelled within the hollow metal engine nacelles. The handed exhaust systems are represented and are correctly indicated as exiting through the top surface of the mainplane.

The engine-working platforms that hinge down from the leading edge of the mainplane are represented, as are the circular fuel tanks. The floats are wire-braced to provide stability, however as the bracing has been achieved to a sensitive scale the floats are of course a delicate part of the model and should be enjoyed with care.

The intention has been to create a model with an attention to detail (so much as can reasonably be created), unusual in a model of this scale but a feature of Crescent Models.

Every model is supplied with a clear (`see through’) acrylic stand in order not to visually dominate the aircraft; it has a stainless steel pin to locate the model and a beize-edged cradle to support it and which is rotational for view.

The model is boxed with a blue foam insert for protection and every one is issued with a "Certificate of Authentication" giving its limited edition number. This number is also subtly indicated under the wing with the "Crescent" moon logo.

The boxed model is £425 (pounds UK Sterling).

The model is ordered by the completion and signing of an identical form in triplicate, the white copy for retention by the collector, with the yellow and orange copies retained by Crescent Models for assembly purposes and filing. This ensures that all parties know precisely what has been ordered, as the form lists the contact details, specification of the model, and gives the limited edition number and the order date. This ensures that each model is built in sequence and no one collector has to wait longer than another. E-mail orders are possible with the agreement of Crescent Models.

Each model takes about six weeks to prepare although in periods of increased demand, this period may be extended. It is not the policy of Crescent Models to rush the creation of a model to make its delivery quicker; the maintaining of the build quality is paramount.

Because component parts and considerable time are committed from the outset, a deposit of £50 (pounds UK Sterling) is requested with the completed and signed forms. The remainder, along with the cost of any shipping, is payable on completion and delivery.

Where collection of the model cannot take place at any of the Aviation collector events that we attend, Crescent Models tries wherever possible to deliver the model to the customer (within a reasonable distance in the South-East of England), to avoid the possibility of any damage in transit, although the packaging has been carefully designed to wrap around the model to avoid this. An additional nominal sum of £10 (pounds UK Sterling) towards the expenses related to this will be charged.
